Improve Your Photography

Photography is a somewhat unique art form in that it requires both technical knowledge and creative thinking. To improve your photography, you need to focus on both the technical and creative.

In this four-part live online workshop experience you'll gain knowledge and confidence in both the technical and creative aspects of photography.

Along the way, you'll be able to get your questions answered by Tim Grey during the live sessions or via email.

The four live online sessions will take place during the month of October 2020. Each session will be approximately two hours in duration. All sessions will be recorded, so that photographers who register for this workshop can view (and download) the session recordings anytime at their convenience.

Session Details

During the four live online sessions included in this online workshop, you'll gain knowledge in both the technical and creative aspects of photography. Here are details of the topics covered in each session:

Mastering Exposure

This session will focus on the technicalities and practicalities of photographic exposure. Topics will include:

• What "Exposure Value" actually means, and how it can be helpful in your photography
• How camera meters attempt to determine appropriate exposure settings
• How to estimate exposure for a scene, even without a meter
• Calculating and evaluating exposure settings
• Methods for gaining confidence using Manual mode, and when it should be employed
• Choosing camera settings to help you achieve accurate exposures
• Techniques for overcoming challenging exposure situations

Creative Control

In this session we'll translate the technical aspects of exposure into the creative control we can exercise over our photos. Topics will include:

• The impact of camera settings on different attributes of a photo
• How to choose your priority for exposure settings
• Understanding depth of field, and techniques for calculating camera settings and the actual depth of field for an image
• How the concept of hyperfocal distance impacts your photos and your photography
• Options for freezing or blurring motion based on shutter speed
• Using accessories to supplement camera settings
• Understanding the role of perspective in your photography

Photographic Composition

This session will go beyond the basic "rules" of composition in photography to help you create photos you are proud of. Topics will include:

• Taking into account your motivation for a photo when composing a scene
• Tips for improving your eye for composition
• Concepts to help you improve your photo composition
• Managing both the "big picture" and "little picture" for composition
• Attributes to watch for when composing a photo

Approaching the Scene

During this session we'll "put it all together" and focus on tips for helping you make the most of your photography. Topics will include:

• Techniques for practicing the key aspects of photography
• How to choose the general and specific scene you will photograph
• Timing your photography for optimal results
• How you can explore multiple creative options for a single subject
• Exploring different angles to consider for a scene
• Examples of photos and the thought process that went into them
